Joining the seminar on recognition and information provision in the time of Covid-19

Activities

Four staff members including Taiji Hotta, our Executive Director, joined the seminar on recognition and information provision in the time of Covid-19: the role of Higher Education Institutions on 18 June 2020. The seminar took place online and was organized by the Thematic Peer Group on the implementation of the Lisbon Recognition Convention (LRC) in EHEA countries.

During the seminar, various topics were raised for discussion regarding information provision by higher education institutions, including which information should be delivered to applicants and graduates, and how to notify the rights students possess according to the LRC. Also discussed were digitalization and micro-credentials.

Helene Peterbauer from European University Association said that students should be informed of their rights, expectation and available resources in terms of qualifications recognition. She also pointed out lack of awareness of LRC among university staff.

Urša Leban from European Student Union described challenges current students were facing such as cancellations of internships, researches and practical sessions, and lack of information from the institutions for the next few months. She also proposed that each student's qualification would be recognized in a flexible manner.

Luca Lantero, the President of the LRC Committee Bureau stressed that the Convention was flexible enough to adopt the current situation in qualifications recognition during the pandemic.

The Tokyo Convention, ratified by the Japanese government in 2017, has the common principles with the LRC, and information provision is the core of our Center. There were some key takeaways from the seminar to learn ways to operate information provision, to implement the Convention and to interact with students and higher education institutions in the country.
