Assessment of Admission Qualifications (in general)

Q:Are the A-levels in Singapore and Sri Lanka recognized as satisfying the qualifications for admission to universities and Professional Training Colleges in Japan?

A:The General Certificate of Education Advanced Level (GCE-A), which is an admission qualification to Japanese universities and Professional Training Colleges, is an admission qualification of the United Kingdom and those of countries other than the UK are not applicable (Article 150, item (vii) of the Enforcement Regulation of the School Education Act).

Meanwhile, a person who has successfully passed the GCE-A from countries other than the UK may be deemed by universities and Professional Training Colleges in Japan to have admission qualification if they satisfy one of the conditions stated below:

  1. A person who has completed 12 years of school education in foreign countries (Article 150, item (i) of the Enforcement Regulation of the School Education Act);
  2. A person who is 18 years of age or older and has passed academic qualification examination deemed equivalent to the completion of 12 years of school education in foreign countries (Public Notice of the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture No. 153 of 1981, items (i)); and
  3. A person who is 18 years of age or older and is recognized by universities or Specialized Training Colleges through their individual admission qualification assessment as having academic abilities equal to or greater than graduates of Japanese Upper Secondary Schools. (Article 150, item (vii) and article 183, item (iii) of the Enforcement Regulation of the School Education Act; NB. same condition is applicable to Professional Training Colleges in accordance with Article 183, item (iii)).
