Notice on the Roles of NIC-Japan

Activities

National Information Center for Academic Recognition Japan (NIC-Japan) has been operating as Japan's official National Information Center (NIC) since September 2019, in accordance with UNESCO's Asia-Pacific Regional Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications in Higher Education (known as the Tokyo Convention).

Following Japan's acceptance of the Global Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications concerning Higher Education (known as the Global Convention) in September 2022 and its entry into force in March 2023, NIC-Japan has also assumed the role of NIC under the Global Convention (Article VIII item 3).

Up until now, in accordance with provisions of the Tokyo Convention (Articles VIII.1 and VIII.2), NIC-Japan has been providing information on the Japanese higher education system and qualifications, providing information on educational systems and qualifications of foreign countries - mainly those of the State Parties to the Tokyo Convention, cooperating with NICs and similar entities of other countries, and conducting surveys and research.
In the light of provisions of the Global Convention (Article VIII, paragraph 5, etc.), there will be no major changes to the above duties but the State Parties to the Global Convention will be added to the target of information provision on foreign educational systems and qualifications. In addition, participation in various activities as a member of the "Network of National Implementation Structures" (Article XIV) is expected.

Reflecting the above, the following pages of this website have been updated:
